What the railway does to a house
Clapham Junction is not in Clapham. The station sits in south-west Battersea, near the top of St John's Hill, roughly a mile north-west of Clapham Common. We explain that twice a week.
Between 100 and 180 trains an hour pass through the seventeen platforms, sixteen of which are in use, and that number does not stay on the noticeboard. Houses backing onto the cutting collect brake dust. It settles on window sills, in the beading of sash frames, and in pale carpet near a window that gets left open all summer. We once pulled grey out of a cream wool runner in a flat on the railway side of Falcon Road while the tenant insisted the room was never dusty. Rooms on the far side of the same building come up noticeably cleaner.
The housing splits at the tracks too. South of them, in the Between the Commons streets, the Victorian terraces have mostly been put back together as family houses, five floors deep counting the lower ground, with side returns at the back and loft conversions on top. North towards Falcon Road and Battersea the same period stock stayed subdivided into flats, and the Winstanley and York Road estates are being redeveloped in phases. Around the station itself there is a growing band of mansion-block style flats and converted railway-side warehouses. Three quite different cleaning jobs inside half a mile, and a fourth if you count the newer blocks along York Road.
Parking is the other thing we ask about. Wandsworth's C4 zone runs a one-hour sub-zone right around the station, so between 9.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday a visiting van uses pay and display, pays by phone up to a four-hour maximum, or runs on a paperless visitor permit that you arrange. On a full move-out clean a visitor permit keeps the van in one spot for the whole job, so nobody breaks off to shift it. If a paid bay is the only option, it goes on the bill at exactly what it cost.

The minimum charge on one-off work is £67. Parking or congestion charges, where a visit needs them, are added at cost. Every end of tenancy clean includes the 48-hour re-clean: if the inventory clerk marks down something we cleaned, we come back and put it right free.

Is Clapham Junction in Clapham?
No. The station is in south-west Battersea, at the top of St John's Hill, about a mile north-west of Clapham Common. Clapham proper is SW4 and sits in Lambeth, a different borough with different parking rules. We cover both, which is why the phone call starts with a postcode rather than a place name.
How much is an end of tenancy clean here?
£156 for a studio, £207 for one bedroom, £243 for two, £339 for three and £425 for four. The price is fixed on property size and agreed before we book. Carpets and the oven are priced separately, because a good number of flats round here have hard floors and a landlord's own oven clean already booked.
Is the water hard in SW11?
Very. Thames Water supplies this part of London from a hard source, and scale shows on chrome and glass within days of a clean. In the restored Victorian bathrooms that are everywhere between the commons, that is the single biggest reason a bathroom looks tired sooner than it should.
Do you work at weekends?
Seven days, 8am to 7pm, at the same rate as a weekday. The one real constraint is Northcote Road on a Saturday, where the street market takes the kerb along the whole road and we have to be unloaded before about nine in the morning.
What is the smallest job you will take?
There is a £67 minimum charge on one off work. A single bedroom carpet at £36 would still be billed at £67, so most people add a second room or the stairs. Regular cleaning runs on its own terms: visits of three hours or more, from £69 for three hours weekly.
